Catching up with 2012
I was at a party last night, which made me realise that I was already almost half way into the first month of what some people still call the 'new year.'Well, a 'party' wasn't quite what it was. It was more a bit of a family gathering to celebrate my daughter's 30th birthday. You won't believe how much hassle I experienced trying to find the right card. I found lots of cards saying 'Happy 30th Birthday' with pretty pink colours and lots of others saying 'Happy Birthday Daughter', but the world seems to be suffering from a shortage of cards saying 'Happy 30th Birthday Daughter.' In the end I knew it was the right choice because she used the words in the card to do an improvised solo during the evening. Or was she mocking because she thought the words were silly?
Anyway, it turns out that my daughter was born on exactly the same day as the future queen of England.
Her birthday is always a kind of psychological alarm clock for me. I know it's coming but it still sneaks up on me to remind me to take a serious look around me. And this year it's calling me to attention with a greater sense of opportunity and urgency. It's not just about the calendar year. I'm not quite sure when I became old enough to have a senior citizens rail card and a daughter who is thirty!
But now that I'm catching up with the fact that this is 2012, it's not so bad really. I am looking forward to doing something about all the things I believe in. What about you?
