How to Pray
Inspiration to Pray
Prayer must be understood as an action itself, a potent political weapon to be used in spiritual warfare against the most powerful forces in the world.” Jim WallisWhile apartheid held South Africa in a seemingly unbreakable grip, Desmond Tutu constantly affirmed God’s power over the authority of the state. At such times, prayers can become a political or even a revolutionary act – a call for God’s kingdom to transform our fallen world.
Of course, prayer also works at a personal level: offering sustenance and strength for those wearied by the daily grind of poverty, or the struggle against it.
In the process of listening or talking to God, we are changed and made more able to serve him. Mission is, after all, God’s work – we can’t do it on our own! So in prayer we may hear a call to move in a new direction, or receive a reminder of the hope and strength God offers to those who work for justice. Sometimes God may call us to urgent action; sometimes to offer us rest and refreshment, so that we don’t burn out.
Could you commit to praying for fifteen minutes twice a week for parts of the global body?
Could you weave prayers for social justice into church services or set up a prayer group with a poverty focus? Many Micah Challenge members have resources that can help you to pray in an informed and specific way.
